January: Commander’s
Comments: I hope everyone had a great holiday season! Things have slowed
down around the Post, with the suspension of open-to-the-public meal
activities until the spring, but we still have some events coming up
to get us through the cold winter months. Football playoffs will be going
on throughout January, culminating with the Super Bowl in early Feb.
Then NASCAR starts back up.
The next District 9 VFW meeting will be on Jan. 13th at 10:00 am in Lawrenceville.
The State Conference will be on Feb. 15-17 in Macon.
The State Commander made some comments in a recent letter that bear repeating
here. First, he published a reminder that continuing members who have not paid
their dues will lose all their membership privileges on Jan. 1st. That includes
receiving newsletters, the right to attend meetings, make motions and vote, as
well as use of the Canteen and other facilities. Our Post is over 100% as far
as membership goes for this year, but we still have some continuing members who
are unpaid for 2008. If you’re one of them, then this is your last newsletter.
Second, the State Commander re-iterated that alcohol is not allowed into Post
meetings. I don’t think we have a problem with this at all, but I’ll
mention it anyway as I sometimes get the question.
New key cards: The Post has new, yellow, key cards to distibute
in January, which will become effective on Feb. 1st. LAVFW, AL, SAL and MCL
need to turn active member lists in to Russ King as early in 2008 as possible
for membership validations for those organizations.
House Committee Election: Last month the membership voted to move Lew Bryan
from House Committee 1 year to House Committee 3 year, and voted in Joel
Turpin as new House Committee 1 year to fill the vacancy.
New Year’s Party: The Post will have its usual New Years Party on Dec.
31st. Bill Ledford’s Band will once again be providing the entertainment,
starting at 8 pm.
Awning Purchase: Post officers have looked into purchasing an awning to cover
the upper level entrance walkway to protect visitors to the Post during inclement
weather, particularly during fish fries, when lines may form at the door.
This is a large expense, to be discussed at the next meeting.
Post Committees: At the moment, the Post Bylaws call for the appointment
of fourteen committees, a number which may well be excessive. A slate of
eleven
committees has actually been appointed. A motion for revision will be presented
at the January meeting, calling for rewriting this section of the Post bylaws.
Post Meeting Time: Remember, new Post meeting time is 6:30 pm!
